Bill Maher, the biggest slut of all

Facebook Twitter Reddit Digg Pinterest Linkedin Tumblr Stumbleupon Delicious Plusone Email

Q.  I welcome “slut” back to the national dialogue. Take moments such as these and celebrate, trust me.

You don’t hear slut as much, particularly as you get older. Women over 40 don’t usually apply, you’d have to really earn that. Girls in high school and college were sluts, whores were always older. Whores hung out at hotel bars, they graduated into whoredom — there was respect involved. Sluts are sluts.

They transition out of it, or become whores — you know, get serious about their slutting. From a tender seed, a whore emerges from whence, many years prior, a slut first broke ground. It’s a beautiful thing to behold, they say. I’m a big fan of nature.

So I welcome the sluts back, I missed them. I guess it still depends how you vote, if you want to mention them in public?

Rush Limbaugh Isn’t the Only Media MisogynistKirsten Powers says plenty of liberal men need to follow Rush Limbaugh, apologize to women.

A.  It’s beyond sluts and whores, we’ve been thrust deeply into

[NOTE: We get cutesy with *asterisks, use them to purposely dilute the severity of a word, we’re doomed to believe that “c*nt” is somehow the same as cunt. It isn’t. Not everything can be a Hallmark card. Words that need not be used in the first place can not be taken back, no sense hiding now behind a wall of punctuation. If it’s gratuitous here, it’s ALL gratuitous and point proven. Being the topic at hand, it’s more appropriate in this space than when said in the original context. Plus, grow up].

cunts and twats.

Underlying problem, the 2012 campaign’s hunger to be about everything except the economy — the reason we’re now talking about contraception and sluts.

This snowballs beyond what Limbaugh said, sticking to anyone documented having said much worse, regularly and sometimes repeatedly, as insults. Both sides play but sharper has been hurled at conservative women and overlooked — stories like this are only a big deal when the victim [Sandra Fluke] is on the left.

Which conservative women are off limits? Who isn’t fair game?

The words are the words, no defending the use. Still, there’s a huge difference doing so within the context of a conversation relating to actions of a sexual nature, which might warrant even thinking them. It’s a lot easier to take it there — still wrong, equally — when Limbaugh spoke of Sandra Fluke’s wanting her birth control paid for by the state, as opposed to Bill Maher’s use as total non-sequiturs.

Speaking of dumb twats,” isn’t even a joke. What the hell’s wrong with a person who’d say that? On satellite television?? Shame also on an audience allowing and encouraging it — not  once, continually.

And the “who, me?” look on his face, like he’s begging for a cookie. What a pussy. How anti-Navy Seal of you, Bill. How non-Trace Adkins.

When Maher calls Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachmann a slut (as Ed Shultz did with Laura Ingraham), there’s no pre-discussion of the reproductive system, insinuation implied that either are sexually careless or active — no conversation kick-start that leads anywhere near the ballpark where sluts are known to play and sometimes shower together after games. It’s generic disrespect.

Paraphrasing the narrative: I don’t agree with your politics, therefore you must give blow jobs to random men and fuck anything that moves for little to no money. No brain. You’re a uterus, essentially. Why does anyone listen to a word you say?

Ike Turner feared what Tina was capable of on her own, understood she didn’t need him; that he’d be nothing without her. Ike also did a lot of cocaine. Anything we’ve learned about Tina Turner since leaving Ike — with a Mobil credit card and 36 cents in her pocket — has only credited the notion that she always had bigger balls than he did. Ike had to work extra, extra hard with Tina: her will so strong, his balls so horribly insignificant — the size of Skittles (also due to the cocaine).

Maher says it’s okay if he calls _______ a cunt because — the woman’s name doesn’t matter (it was Palin) or what the rest of the sentence is.

Sarah Palin is Bill Maher’s Tina Turner. If Palin was all the things Maher says she is, he has absolutely nothing to worry about. She’s got the brain of a noodle, just look at the kids. To be believed, it’s so much not a fair fight at this point, it’s kind of embarrassing to keep dipping in that well with such anger.

It’s laced, simply because his targets are walking and breathing. Yet he (and Louis C.K.) aren’t hammered for it.

Not really disputing, but Maher (like Louis) is a comedian and calls men some nasty things too. Limbaugh is not a comedian, so he doesn’t get the leeway that a comedian should.

So if Limbaugh was a comedian, he could call Hillary Clinton a dumb twat and that would go over well? Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann — comedians too? Larry the Cable Guy mentions Michelle Obama and “a big, hairy set of balls in her mouth” and everyone would have a laugh?

It’s a fine line, and I’m not saying it’s right, just that comedians can get away with making fun of race, gender, handicap, sexual orientation, or pretty much anything, while media folks cannot. Society has always given comedians much more license.

Another difference is that Limbaugh’s programming is advertiser supported. Maher’s show is not. Again, not judging rightness or wrongness, but the commercial realities …

Maher has cable subscribers to answer to, even a small wave of cancellations prompts a press release or Piers Morgan appearance. It’s dollars coming from somewhere; individuals, not sponsors. If one of these highly-crafted, rollicking cuntisms falls on the wrong lady, maybe he’s called into an office.

Larry the Cable Guy’s “hairy balls” joke wouldn’t award the same misogynistic shelter, one reason Maher has safety on cable. Can’t play that on network, he’s already proven it. So much quality on HBO, so easy to turn the channel, he’s insulated — I’m going to give up True Blood, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones because Bill Maher said something Bill Maher is expected to say? I’ll watch one of the other 40 HBO channels instead — so it’s cable ratings red meat for the sake of red meat. It should only be encouraged, at that point. That said, if he’s attacking liberal women, he doesn’t have a show.

Still think it’s comparing apples and oranges by adding Maher to the mix. It would have been a better article if she had just focused on Matthews et al.
Calling a woman a cunt is calling a woman a cunt. What’s the job title of the person saying it have to do with anything? You start giving Maher a pass, as you clearly have, you’re giving any conservative comedian the right to say the same sexist bullshit about, say, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein — and I’d expect you to defend their right to do so when the time comes. By this standard, Adam Carolla now has free reign to say anything he wants about anybody and he’s an orange, so it’s okay. It’s only bad when apples say it.

You’re also letting Maher have it both ways, seeing as he’s unquestionably a political comedian. It’s not as if he’s Brian Regan and never goes there. Maher wouldn’t have an act without — he rarely tells a joke which fails to involve — politics. Why grant him immunity from words and insults he used? Throw the twat bomb, hide behind: “I’m a comedian, I can call women twats?”

He directs the words at someone in your family, I’m sure it doesn’t feel any better knowing it came from a comedian and not a political commentator. Last I heard, sluts are sluts.

I agree, comedians run further risk because they explore wider topic ranges, compared to hosts who need not breach the threshold. I wouldn’t expect Chris Matthews to get into the same trouble Jon Stewart might because the window of potential simply shouldn’t exist. Stewart could host a segment called, “Today in Slut News,” while Hardball Chris could not, making it even more glaring for news people named in this article and commendable that Stewart and Steven Colbert are not.

In comedy, you understandably and deliberately play with fire. This controversy is overwhelmed by the stench of politically-motivated selective outrage. Had Limbaugh used his words to attack Palin, the left would be doing cartwheels; he’d be on the cover of Newsweek, highlighting the new era of civil discourse.
