99 weeks of unemployment on the wall

Facebook Twitter Reddit Digg Pinterest Linkedin Tumblr Stumbleupon Delicious Plusone Email

Unemployment is extended to 99 weeks.

You take one down, pass it around and still can’t get over how this is five weeks shy of two years. Those on it are called the “99ers” and I’m not sure why.

Maybe something to do with Wayne Gretzky, Toto or Barbara Feldon.

A conversation I had recently with an imaginery friend who, for the purposes of this venue, I’ll call Steve Treadway from Jacksonville. Don’t tell him I used his real name or he’ll be all up in my Kool-Aid …

ME:  I was on unemployment in 1987 when it was 26 weeks and I always felt guilty.

ST:  But it’s insurance. Nothing to feel guilty about.

ME:  I know but I was always afraid they were going to find out I didn’t qualify — I did — but they’d find some reason why I didn’t and I’d have to pay it all back. I was looking for jobs, meeting with counselors, doing everything by the book.

ST:  You ever find a job?

ME:  I don’t know. I don’t think I ever did.
